From Mar. 2014 “Sigiriya – Cave Paintings, Ruins & Wild Elephants – Oh My!”
Wasp attacks occasionally happen to hikers at Lion’s Rock. Sure…I’d keep quiet!??
Surprisingly colorful and saucy paintings on Lion’s Rock – this is an example.
Two of the charming maidens gracing the sides of Lion’s Rock
Beautiful view atop Lion Rock. The challenge will be getting down.
Quite a climb to the top of Lion’s Rock – and the view is worth it.
Scary steep.
Thankfully wiire screen encloses part of the upper staircase.
This is one of the lower staircases to the citadel.
Such a long line of beautiful Buddhas
Buddha’s pillow looks hard as a rock!
I was fascinated by the variety of mudras (hand gestures) exhibited by the Buddhas.
Another shot of beautiful paintings on ceiling.
Pujas (floral offerings) can be quite fancy or, like this one, simple but beautiful.
The cobra has spread his hood to shade the Buddha in this classic view.
I like this shot because it shows what a big impact the caves make on visitors.

Notice how she wields that machete with just one hand.

On the train tracks around Ella.
This guy walked along the tracks for more than a mile, balancing his bike on one of the rails without ever wavering.
Walking home along the train tracks.
Despite their obvious appeal, we all know that walking on the train tracks is dangerous.

The wages of sin and all that…
One area of the cave was filled with Buddhas.

I always check out a temple or two in the towns I visit. The temple at Mirissa was fairly modest. The young monks invited me into a building towards the back and I saw these colorful paintings on the ceiling.
Carving on wall outside temple gate.

This young monk greeted me with a welcoming smile.

The landscape is so beautiful that it’s hard to get upset if you don’t spot a leopard. (Pun intended for those who will appreciate it.)
